July 25, Horseback

Kit Cat and I went horseback riding in Rocky Mountain National Park this morning. It was the first time that the expression, "Hold your horses," has actually applied to a real-life situation for me. The park was as beautiful as always; it reminded me of how lucky I am to live here.

July 22, Skating

Today is another quick photo (Nikon again). I have been so busy lately (or maybe all year?!) that taking photos for this has been a bit of a chore. I am so busy today because I am preparing for a super special visitor: my little (but taller) sister! At thirteen, this is her first solo visit to Colorado, and I am SO SO SO excited! I can't wait to go horseback riding, trampoline jumping, camping, giggling, shopping, cooking, etc with her. Everything is more fun with a sister!

I left my camera at home, and unexpectedly stayed in Boulder for the evening. So I borrowed Jennifer's Nikon (gasp!). It made my brain hurt a bit, but it was also fun to play with a different camera.

July 18, Fireplace

I was happy to get out of the house this morning, and headed to Eldorado Canyon State Park to hike up to the old Crags hotel site. In keeping with much of Colorado's history, the Crags Hotel burned down many years ago. All that remains is the fireplace, rusty old nails, and something that looks like broken china dishes. I can't help but think that if this were the East Coast, all of those nails and china pieces would be behind glass. I forgot how good ponderosa pines smell as they bake in the sun, and today they were especially fragrant in the 98 degree weather. Needless to say, I was also happy to get back to the truck!

Another "I am being lazy so let me take a quick shot of something around the house" shot. I stayed in all day yesterday, painting that wall and doing various other home tasks that I have been putting off. Real exciting stuff, let me tell you.

I have been ignoring this kitchen/back entrance hallway wall project for months, and decided that I should probably at least get it painted this weekend. This is my before shot. This is also my "I am being lazy so let me take a quick shot of something around the house" shot.

What time is it? Time to see Paul! Last night I was lucky enough to see the living legend Paul McCartney in concert. He made me blush, he made me cry, he made me laugh, he made me sing, he made me dance. And there were pyrotechnics. It was amazing. Thanks Paul.

As I have been sitting in the kitchen on this fine Sunday morning, Harry has been participating in his favorite summer of sitting in the window sill. He has changed spots and positions throughout the morning. What a cat.

July 10, Quandary Peak

A view from the top! Colorado has 58* peaks that are over 14,000 feet. Yesterday Tracy, Sara, Andrea and I summited Quandary Peak, which is the 13th tallest peak in the state, at 14,265 feet. This was my 8th time summiting a 14er, and their first. Go us!

*53 of these are ranked 14ers. According to 14ers.com website, "To be ranked, a peak must rise at least 300 feet above the saddle that connects it to the nearest 14er peak (if another exists nearby). This guideline has been in use in Colorado for some time."

July 9, Hahns Heinz

My friend Hahns (formerly Hans) Heinz made an appearance over the weekend: he accompanied me and some girlfriends passed Breck to the base of Quandary Peak to camp.

July 8, People

These little people sit on a window in my kitchen. I purchased them at a boutique in Colombo, Sri Lanka called Paradise Road. I was there two Novembers ago, and it was an interesting experience. We headed from Colombo to our beach resort, passing tsunami damage and military checkpoints every couple hundred yards (since the country was in a civil war). I was nervous about traveling to a country at war, but that didn't last long. While I was playing Jenga in a resort suite, terrorists were attacking Mumbai, possibly targeting westerners, and I became far more concerned with my remaining time in India. But, Sri Lanka is an awesome country--friendly people, beautiful scenery, history, baby elephants, beaches, mountains, white water. I hope I get to go back and experience it more one day.

I had a great Fourth of July: family, boat, beach, water, sunshine, seashells, barbecue, lightning bugs, fireworks. Thanks!

July 3, Catching Lightning Bugs

What is summer without lightning bugs? Apparently they don't really live out here in Colorado (I've heard rumors of small groups living near the soccer fields in North Boulder and at St. Vrain State Park in Longmont.). Which means that I was eagerly awaiting their nightly arrival at 8:30 p.m. while I was in New York. My uncle and step-dad helped catch them so I could attempt to photograph them. In the photo, Chris has one in his hands.
