Made it back to town in time for a Memorial Day BBQ. Thanks to everyone for contributing to a great weekend!

As I mentioned, I had a lot of fun over the weekend. I also learned never ever ever consider taking your dog white water rafting without a life vest. Luckily, all three dogs that went rafting are fine, as are all four people!

Had a great weekend. Went camping with friends for a couple nights, and took this shot with one Elinchrom Ranger Quadra light aimed at the couple in the late evening. The dog just happened to step into the shot at the right moment!

May 28, Vine

The warm weather seems to be reliable these days (although in Colorado, you never know). Sometime in the last couple weeks, bringing a coat to work with me was forgotten about, and I don't give flip flops a second thought. I forgot just how good temperatures in the 80s and 90s feel to me. It is so much easier for me to exist in the heat. The garden seems to be happy too, and even the grape vine is starting to turn green.

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all!

I got in an hour of banjo playing on Sunday, but today all I got in was this quick photo. My first lesson is this Thursday. It's gonna' be a....goodtime.

A quick post...I am going to start playing the old banjo again. Imagine if I had played it consistently since I got it 5 years ago?!

May 21, Switzerland Trail

It's amazing how much better the air feels at another 2000 feet! This evening my friend/hiking partner/patient model and I headed west for a bit of exploring after we had to scrap our initial plans. Up Lee Hill, Old Stage, Lefthand, Lickskillet, through Gold Hill to the Switzerland Trail. We got out and walked a couple miles in that clean mountain air, and I felt lucky to live here.

What do you think the rules are if you create "art" by taking photos of movies? This image came out over-exposed, but I kind of like it, especially considering that I barely got a shot in.

Two of my friends own a Porsche that I am pretty sure is left over from the 80s. When I look at this car, I see Tom Cruise and aviator sunglasses and pastel button up shirts. I wish they would fix it up and drive it everywhere.

And this is what I saw on my way home tonight.

May 16, Pinewood Reservoir

Today I had myself a Sunday. One part involved heading north to check out a new hiking location--the Pinewood Reservoir just north of Carter Lake. We hiked 3-5 easy miles with the dogs under Colorado blue skies. I played with wide open apertures 1.4-1.8, and I think this photo will look better if you click on it to make it bigger.

(Okay, it only looks slightly better bigger. I uploaded it in low res, so I am not all that happy with the bigger version. But I am done with this blog post.)

May 15, Pimlico and Crawfish

What a great weekend! On Saturday I headed to a friend's for their annual crawfish boil. She and her fiancee are from Louisiana, and once a year they ship in pounds and pounds and pounds of live crawfish, and boil them in batches with garlic, potatoes, and artichokes. It reminds me a bit of a crab feast (picnic tables and all), except you stand while you eat.

Coincidently, yesterday was also Preakness. So, we also got to bet on horses like Jackson Bend, Schoolyard Dreams, Love's Blush, and Baltimore Bob. I picked Wins and Shows, and lost. Watching horse racing is way more fun while betting, eating crawfish, and drinking beer with lots of friends. Possibly more fun that way than attending the actual event--my guy friends seemed to leave Preakness with black eyes and strange women, and my girlfriends told me of sketchy bathroom scenarios.

May 14, Tomato

We're building a vegetable garden, and it looks like I might have tomatoes before October this year! For whatever reason (arid climate is my best guess), people in Colorado like their pea gravel. Instead of green garden beds, they fill in areas with small gray rocks. Ugly. Rob and I are slowly reclaiming the land in our backyard. Last year we removed the back strip and put in a xeriscape garden that is doing pretty well (plus I've learned to identify a lot of native flowers). This year we are removing a side strip, and will fill it with tons of dirt, till, and, voila! Tomatoes! In the past I have tried growing them in pots, but they never yield any fruit until October or November, and tasty they are not.

May 13, Pay Phone

Look what I noticed this morning! When was the last time you used one of those?

In elementary school, I remember heading down to the local Super Fresh grocery store (did anyone else hang out at grocery store shopping centers as a kid?!) with Sharita, and checking the phones for spare quarters in hopes of finding enough change to buy a candy bar in Rite Aid. In middle school, I remember calling people from the mall pay phones, which someone decided should be installed way down some long white isolated dirty corridor. I remember using them all the time in Europe to call home with calling cards. Come to think of it, the last time I used one was actually a year and a half ago with Sharita (again), in a dingy, tucked away hallway at a shopping mall in Bangalore.

May 7, Lilacs

I love lilacs. And when we moved into our house, I kept saying, "If only we had some lilac bushes, I'd be set." And then one day late last spring, I walked around the back fence, and saw some sad but familiar-looking flowering purple plant. LILACS! We had about 4 huge bushes all along! I spent hours and hours pruning (is that the right verb?) the bushes early last summer in hopes they would produce healthy lilacs this spring. Happily, the bushes are blooming away right now. Happiness!

May 6, Phish 3D in Cheyenne!

Last night was so much fun! We headed towards our neighbors to the north to watch the new Phish 3D movie recapping Festival 8. Some people drive to Denver, and others to Wyoming. Luckily the Cheyenne movie theater wasn't crowded, so we all got seats together. (Ha, ha!) It made me giggle to see Trey, Page, Mike, and Fishman in 3D. Some of my friends thought the 3D wasn't necessary, but the slight cheesiness factor, and feeling like I was really there, won me over. They played the best Suzy G I've ever heard (if only I had gone to Indio!) featuring Sharon Jones, Saundra Williams (loved her energy), and a very happy Trey. Viva Phish! Now if only we can square away this Telluride situation...

This photo was taken from a Bojangles (fried chicken and biscuits and cajun fries fastfood joint) parking lot in Whiteville, North Carolina. It was 85 degrees out, very humid, and about to storm. The Bojangles parking lot was jumpin'. I can just feel that soft humidity when I look at this shot, which makes me happy.

May 1, Fish Fry

I choose this photo from yesterday. Sometimes it is hard for me to pick the "best" images versus the images that mean more to me. In this photo Rob and his dad are about to fry up yesterday's catch. I've never actually eaten the fish that Rob has spent hours and hours at the beach reeling in (in Bethany he threw them back or gave them to our beach neighbors), or participated in a fish fry. The fish were tasty, and we ate them with hush puppies, tater tots, and gulped all that down with homemade sweet tea.
