I received cette carte postale in the mail today from France. My friend/fellow SMCM art major/awesome designer Melissa Dean was living there for several months, and I assigned her to visit Pere Lachaise Cemetery as part of her Vicarious Experience Project (check it out here and here). While many famous people are buried in this old cemetery (Frederic Chopin, Sarah Bernhardt, Delacroix, Max Ernst), Jim Morrison may be the most famous "resident," which is why he pops up on the card.

September 28, Drinking

Finally, not food! Or animal! But another uninspired shot. A lot of my "spare" time has been devoted to cooking yummy vegan food (which is just delicious food without dairy products), and then I've been zonked after eating dinner. Yesterday was cleaning, yoga, making vegan butternut squash soup, walking Chloe...today was running after, grocery shopping, cooking vegan paninis...spending time behind the camera for this blog is a bit burdensome. I am tired, and I keep wondering if I would be this tired if I were 5-10 years younger.
And now I am going to curl up on the couch and watch a Netflix movie that I've had for weeks. Good night!

Two pet shots! I feel like I've been camera lazy the past few days, probably because I am busy, busy with the photo work.
Yesterday was a fun day though. I attended the Longmont Studio Tour, and was happy to finally meet Britt Ripley and see his work first hand. I don't normally buy photography when I go to open studios, but his printing makes it worth it. To print several shades of white in one image is a daunting task for me, but he sure nails it. The colors are so so lush, and I love his flowers and horses. I was also happy to revisit Donald Sayers in Niwot. I purchased additional works from him, including an acrylic of a horse.
So now I have a lot of horse art.

September 22, Panzanella
© Susannah Storch 2010
I've been doing a lot of cooking this week...muffins, sweet potato coconut chili soup with Thai basil pesto, and panzanella so far. This is because I am preparing to give up dairy for a few weeks, and am starting in on vegan recipes. I used to know a vegan and I thought she was semi nuts, but now that I have two awesome vegan cookbooks, I see how great it could be. Except for two words: no pizza. We'll see how it goes.

September 18, Huron
This past weekend I tried to summit Huron again with other friends, only this time we parked at the right trailhead and we hiked on the correct trail. We summited without (too many) problems, and the fall color was just spectacular. The bottom shot shows Jaime summiting and many yellow aspens.
If you look at both pictures, you'll see the same background mountains. I wonder how far off we were from Huron when the top photo was taken.

This is a photo of the street light outside our house. Does it count?! Apparently iPhone cameras are awful in low light! I was so tired last night that I went to sleep at 8:45, and this is the only photo I took yesterday. I took it while trying to get the energy to move from the couch to the bed. Ha!

September 9, Chautauqua and Cat
© Susannah Storch 2010
I decided to not check out the fire today--I needed to focus on the positive. So I went for a walk through Chautauqua with my camera. I took my time, and saw an apple tree (no idea there are rogue apple trees in the park), a praying mantis, and bear poop. Chautauqua is so pretty and refreshing; I should go there a lot more.
When I got home, I saw the nut being his usual self.

This photo was taken yesterday, the third day of the Fourmile Canyon Fire. I have never seen anything like this in my life, and the number of burnt down homes (169) continues to increase. I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like, what I would try to save, how I would manage to corral the cat into a crate...Last night our waitress heard us talking about the fire, and said her home is gone. How do you continue business-as-usual when all of this is happening to you?! How do you continue business-as-usual if you live in the home towards the bottom-middle of the photo, and all that destruction is so so close? Hopefully the wind won't be so bad tonight that they have to evacuate parts of the city of Boulder.
If you wanted to help some fire-related causes:
The Longmont Humane Society, 9595 Nelson Road, is asking for donations to support pets of evacuees. The shelter needs machine-washable blankets, towels, canned dog and cat food, pet toys and cash donations. To contribute, visit longmonthumane.org or call 303-772-1232.
The Humane Society of Boulder Valley needs blankets, towels, cat litter, canned dog and cat food, 6-foot leashes and cash donations. Visit boulderhumane.org to donate online or text "pets" to 50555 to add a $10 donation to your cell phone bill. Items can be dropped off at 2323 55th St. in Boulder.
The Foothills United Way is accepting donations to support fire evacuees. To contribute to the Fourmile Canyon Fire Relief Fund, or for additional information about available resources, visit unitedwayfoothills.org or call 211 to connect with the United Way hotline.
The town of Gold Hill is accepting donations for fire victims through Paypal, at goldhilltown.com.

September 7, Fire II
The fire continued throughout the day, and so far at least 67 structures have burnt down. Awful, awful, awful.

September 6, Fire
There was a large wildfire just west of Boulder today. I went on a small excursion to check it out and ended up on a 4 hour drive through the foothills, taking photos in the chilly, windy weather. As the day progressed in definitely got worse, and my heart goes out to the families, pets, homes, and history that lie in the fire's path. May the winds die down tonight.

I had the best potato salad of my life yesterday. Normally potato salad is nothing that I get excited about, but Brad's-via-Bobby Flay was delicious! We also had sausages with wasabi mayo, which were quite tasty as well. It was fun to hang with old friends and new friends for a Labor Day weekend BBQ in Boulder. Thanks Jaime and Brad!

September 1, Bracelet
© Susannah Storch 2010
Although I gave up jelly bracelets years ago, I was pleased to receive this $20 dragonfly bracelet in the mail yesterday. I bought it to help fund the search for fellow Coloradoan Aubrey Sacco, who has been missing in Nepal since April. From what I've read about Aubrey, she is a free spirit who loves life, travel, yoga, photography, glitter, and seems to be an all-around wonderful person. She recently graduated from CU, and was on a journey with stops in some of the places that I visited a couple years ago (Sri Lanka, and then I think she visited Delhi and Bangalore as well). She was hiking alone in Nepal, and missed her flight home to the USA. She hasn't been seen since. A massive search yielded no evidence that she has been killed. To find out more or to help fund the search, visit Aubrey Sacco's Facebook page or her personal website.
